The study of Genesis 1-11 inevitably leads to a discussion of how we can harmonize the account of the creation with science. We must deal especially with the theory of evolution and the supposed age of the earth of billions of years. To deal thoroughly with this issue is beyond the scope of this course, but we will give some basic guidelines and offer some options for harmonizing science and the Bible.
It is important to remember that God is the author of both the Bible and nature. We call the former "special revelation" and the latter "general revelation," and God has revealed His truth through both of them. Therefore, there is no ultimate conflict between the two. Our problem is in finding the correct interpretation of the Bible and of the scientific evidence. As evangelical Christians, we will always give the priority to the Scriptures, since they are God's special inspired verbal revelation. Of course we often misunderstand the Bible also, but its form of communication is more precise, and the Holy Spirit works in a special way as we read it.
