Argument: No Article

One of the most important passages about the nature of Christ is John 1:1:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This clearly identifies Jesus as God, saying "the Word was God." The context shows that the "Word" refers to Jesus. The rest of the chapter tells that John the Baptist came to witness to the Word, who was Jesus, and verse 14 says that the Word "became flesh." It also says that the Word already existed "in the beginning." Furthermore, verse 3 tells us that the Word created all things.

Unfortunately, some pretend to use this verse to prove that Jesus was not God, but only “a god” among others. Their argument is based on the fact that in the original Greek text there is no definite article (“the”) before “God.” They say that when there is no definite article, it should be translated with an indefinite article, “a god.” Is this valid? To answer this challenge, we must know something of Greek grammar, especially the use of nouns and articles.

QUESTION:

What is the argument of those that say that the grammar of John 1:1 proves that Jesus is not God?
